Weekly Group Lessons

We teach lessons in progressive, six-week sessions, meaning it is best to start at the beginning of the session, and required to do so for Basic Swing, Swindy Hop, and Lindy I.    Our most recent session of classes ended on May 12.  Please check back for when our next session of classes begins.

We commonly teach a make-up Basic Swing lesson at 6:00 on week 2 for those who missed week 1, followed by the regularly-scheduled week 2 class at 7:00.  After the second week of classes, we ask that all Basic Swing students please wait until the beginning of the next session.

Beginners and newcomers to Austin Lindy Hop should start with Basic Swing and progress from there.  We encourage even transfers from other Swing studios to start with Basic Swing or to take Basic Swing concurrent with Swindy Hop so as to benefit from the fundamentals we emphasize that help build a better foundation for Lindy Hop.

We currently teach the following Group Lessons on Wednesday nights at The American Legion Mansion.   Click here to register for classes.  (Click on the Class name for a description).

Basic Swing:  Wednesdays, 7:00.

Lindy I:  Wednesdays, 7:00.

(Pre-requisite: Basic Swing & Swindy Hop or instructor approval))

"Swindy Hop": Wednesdays, 8:15.

  (Pre-requisite: Basic Swing)

Lindy II Series: Wednesdays, 8:15.

            (Pre-requisite: Lindy I)

Individual classes are only $7 each (by far the least expensive in town).

A full 6-week session of classes is only $35.

Our lessons provide instruction for casual and "serious" dancers.  You can go from being a complete beginner to a solid, competent Lindy Hopper in only six months.  Click here for "The Austin Lindy Program."   Our lessons emphasize not only learning all the right "moves," but also developing skills that can allow you to dance improvisationally with anyone else.  We also emphasize music appreciation--dancing to the music with "musicality"--by teaching how to understand and interpret the music with physical movement.

Note: Partners are not required at Registration.

You do not need to have a partner to register for or to take any of our Group Lessons.  Although couples are definitely welcome and encouraged, very few people actually register with a specific partner, and nobody should use that as an excuse for not learning how to dance.  Even if registering with a partner, all students will need to rotate partners in class so as to learn solid social dance skills that will make sense when dancing with anyone in the country, not just here in Austin.  A large part of the fun of social dancing comes from dancing with different people, anyway.

Aside from the entire session being a better deal, we again strongly encourage students in Swing I and Lindy I, especially, to take the entire session because each week strongly builds upon the previous week's lesson.  Although all classes at any level will build upon each other, the entire 6--week Swing I and Lindy I series should be considered as more of a bundled package than just a bunch of individual classes.

Private Lessons

Private Lessons are more expensive, but crucial to receiving individualized attention to your own strengths and weaknesses as a dancer that group lessons by definition cannot provide.  They are also easier to plan around your schedule.  You can take a private lesson individually, or split the cost with a partner.  As an introductory special, private lessons are only $35 per hour for individuals, $45 an hour for couples.  Contact Lawrence Page at LP@AustinLindy.com for more information.

Event or Special Group Lessons

Our instructors are available for teaching at events such as weddings, corporate events, festivals, church or religious group events, youth group events, sporting events, bar/bas mitzvahs, proms, dances, music shows or concerts, or anywhere that might need an ice-breaking dance lesson.   The introductory lesson often helps to make the event even more memorable by drawing the audience into the event more than just a mere performance would do.  The lesson gives  your guests a certain comfort level with dancing that they might not otherwise have were they not offered the lesson.

The lesson also serves to "break the ice" and promotes mingling at your event.  The guests who take the lesson will rotate partners during it.  As such, people who otherwise might not meet will often end up striking up conversations as they rotate partners or after the lesson, often breaking people out of the small circle of familiar people to whom they might otherwise cling.  And it is fun.  Just as a good gift is something that someone appreciates but would not think to buy for themselves, the lesson serves to get the people at your event to do something they know they would like to do, but would not think to do (or dare to do) on their own, themselves.  Our instructors for these events focus on ensuring that all involved have a great, fun, and memorable time doing so.

Our instructors are also available to teach a series of classes for your own group (schools, businesses, clubs, etc.) anywhere in Austin.  Please contact us using the form below or e-mail us at info@AustinLindy.com for more information.

The History of Swing for Lindy Hoppers

This class teaches what it says.  Appreciating the development of the Swing Rhythm in Jazz, Blues, Rock, and other forms of music enhances one's ability to interpret and enjoy the music to which we dance.  It will also teach the subtleties of dancing differently to different types of Swing music.  This class will be offered in weekend workshops, only.
