Last month's recommendation was Java Noodles, an Indonesian restaurant I discovered by accident on East Oltorf. This month's recommendation is another mid-price-range, South-Orient restaurant with "Noodles" in its name: Madam Mam's Noodles and More. Madam Mam's is on "the drag" on campus at Guadalupe and 26th street. Perhaps because of its location on campus, many non-students have overlooked this restaurant thinking it could not be that good if it is on campus. Instead, everyone I know seems to end up going to Thai Kitchen, a local chain of Thai restaurants, for Thai food. We tried Madam Mam's on a lark back in October, and it blew us away. Not only is the food more flavorful than other Thai restaurants in Austin, Madam Mam's also seems to capture the true unique essence of true Thai cuisine, which blends tropical flavors such as coconut, peanut, and pineapple, with zesty curries and red pepper spices, all cooked with Oriental vegetables and preparation methods. It is rare and somewhat difficult to make this unique combination of influences work on a restaurant-scale level, but Madam Mam's does so. Madam Mam's (as well as Java Noodles) also brings to life the notion of "Noodle Houses" I once enjoyed in Chicago and that combine several Southern Oriental influences into a unique, Oriental-American cuisine that (according to many critics) exceeds even the authentic food found in the actual South Orient regions from which they receive inspiration. Madam Mam's is also conveniently located just around the corner from The Fed, which makes it a perfect Thursday night spot.
