The American Legion Mansion
We feel very excited to have found The American Legion
Mansion as our primary
teaching and event venue. The Home was built in 1858 as the Johnson Home, and
it is a
historical landmark in Austin. In 1919, World War One veterans from Austin established
the American Legion post
number 76 there. The upstairs Hall of Honor is a large room with
wood floors and a view overlooking Eilers Park and Town Lake.
The Legion Mansion is located at the junction of MoPac and Lake Austin
Blvd./5th/6th Streets,
overlooking the MoPac bridge over Town Lake from the North. (Lake Austin
Blvd splits into 5th/6th street at MoPac.) You can see the Legion mansion prominently
from MoPac heading North as you cross Town Lake. It is also located one block
away from Magnolia Central, and a block or so away from Deep Eddy Swimming Pool.
(See maps below) The address is 2201 Veterans Drive, Austin,
Texas.
Directions: From
downtown, take 6th street (one way, westbound) until you reach and go
underneath MoPac Expressway. From MoPac, take
the Lake Austin Blvd Exit and get to Lake Austin Blvd. (From
the South, exit 1st/5th street/Lake Austin Blvd, take the left fork for
5th/Lake Austin Blvd, and then turn left at the stop sign after the exit.
That street will become Lake Austin Blvd. From the
North, the first stoplight after the exit is Lake Austin
Blvd).
You will see a "RunTex" shoe store on the
Southwest corner of Lake Austin Blvd and the Southbound MoPac Frontage Road
(Atlanta Street, on the West side of MoPac). Head South on the MoPac
Frontage Road (Atlanta Street) from the Lake Austin Blvd intersection. (Left
turn if you came from the South or East, straight if you came from the
North). There will be a MoPac entrance ramp on your left. Stay
right. After RunTex, you will see an alley. ("Foster
Avenue" on the map below, but it is really an alley.) Immediately
after that alley is the entrance to the gravel parking lot for the Mansion,
marked by two four-foot tall, square stone pillars. Parking is also
available along Atlanta Street and down the small hill (turn right) on Veterans
Drive. Please also refer to the maps below.
We're sorry, but due to restrictions imposed upon us by The American Legion,
there is no rice, birdseed, or flower-petal throwing allowed on the American
Legion grounds. Confetti and Hay throwing is also banned.
