City Rhythm Orchestra: Swingin' Blue

Greg Avakian of Philadelphia turned Jeramie onto the City Rhythm Orchestra recently, a great, full Big Band based in Philadelphia playing true-to form Big Band Swing music.  Joey DeFrancesco joins the orchestra on the Hammond B3 organ on this CD, combining two of Lawrence's favorite elements in Lindy Music--the Big Band and the Hammond B3 organ--to produce an amazing CD of danceable music.

This album features four phenomenal, danceable songs, including one of the best variations we have heard of Duke Ellington's classic, "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," and a grooving version of Count Basie's "Splanky."

The only downside to the album is the sound production quality.  Although it is good enough to add to the "knock your socks off" initial feeling, the low end and high end were boosted too much so as to make the music sound is a bit "boxy" or suppressed.  Instead of a clear, accurate, live sound, it sounds a bit processed.  The processing does not interfere with the accuracy of the organ sound, but it does muffle or alter the natural sound of the horn instruments.  Nonetheless, it is still a good hi-fi recording of a Big Band as we rarely get to hear in the modern age, so it is well worth a listen.

You can purchase the CD directly from the band from their website.  Click on this link to get there.
